£18m funding to “transform” UK construction sector

construction news februaryAn £18m investment in technologies ranging from augmented reality design tools to swarming robots that mimic the collaborative behaviour of termites could help transform UK construction, the UK’s main research funding body has claimed.

Made through funding body UKRI, and drawn from the government’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF), the cash is being ploughed into a range of projects aimed at making construction more efficient, sustainable and productive.

One of my hacks was out with a City type recently and talk turned to shooting. It turns out he doesn’t shoot grouse because of the prohibitive £100-a-bird cost. A party of 10 can rack up a £40,000 bill for a day’s shooting on the country’s grouse moors, he said.

He told my man he sticks to cheaper game instead, such as pheasant. “And how much,” inquired my hack, with an unfortunate slip of the tongue, “does it cost to shoot a peasant?”

Major construction firms sign up to Heathrow apprenticeship plan

£38m funding boost for construction classrooms

construction news februaryT Levels are equivalent to A Levels and will be taught at more than 50 further education venues from 2020.

Construction is one of the first technical subjects on offer alongside education and digital.

Construction courses will focus on design, surveying and planning.

The £38m will make sure young people taking the new technical courses have access to industry standard equipment and high quality facilities to “gain the skills and knowledge employers demand.”
